Haiti Earthquake Relief Tax DeductibleHaiti Earthquake Relief Tax Deductible

A new tax relief law allows people who contributed in 2010 to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti to take a tax deduction for the contribution on their 2009 tax return instead of their 2010 return. This means you can receive an immediate tax benefit, rather than having to wait until you file next years return.  However, you CANNOT take the deduction both years.

At the mid-term meeting on January 7, 2006, State Deputy Reginald Beckett presented a check in the amount of $50,000 to Father Doyle, President of St. Augustine School.

Recently, Supreme Director Jim White toured the area, and viewed the restoration of the MAX school buildings.  He presented a check from the New Jersey State Council for an additional $3,000.00 to Father Doyle.

Council 5015 helps Sister CityCouncil 5015 helps Sister City

River Edge (NJ) Council 5015 has been working with the River Edge Cultural Center in helping out a "sister city" (Covington, Louisiana) that had been affected by Hurricane Katrina.  In addition to supplies and monetary donation, Council Grand Knight Dennis Alfano has been in weekly contact with the Knights of Columbus Council in Covington.

The Volunteer Director of "Visions", Demeta Lee sent this note after the truck arrived from River Edge:

"I wish that I could explain just how I felf when I saw Nigel and the truck and the boxes and the wide screen TV.  I couldn't explain it.  The only thing that I could do was cry.  I don't mean almost cry, or wanted to cry, I mean literally cry with tears of excitement, tears of joy, tears of thankfulness, tears of gratitude.  The thought of a group of people, a town of people who didn't experience what we experienced, but felt what we felt coming together to help - us.  The obvious showing of concern and love was just too much for my heart.

When the girls saw all the personal hygiene items you sent, they did a little dance.  You know the dance of victory the dance of joy.  I had not seen them that excited since before Katrina.  I went out and bought gift bags so that I could separate the personal items into their own little gift bags.

If this was a situation where we would have to repay you, we wouldn't be abe to afford it.  There is no price on love, on caring, on blessings.  This reminds me of the charge card commercial that says some things are - priceless.  The joy and excitement you have given us is beyond anything that is material.  You can't bottle this feeling.  I want you to know that River Edge will always be in our prayers and we will continue to thank God for you.  You cannot know how much you have blessed us - blessed our spirit.

Showers of Blessings!

Demeta Lee, Visions Volunteer Director
